1. Reminder ⚠️ Why a good bicycle helmet is indispensable – even in 2026!
- Safety first: Head injuries are no joke – so: Never go without! Whether on a road bike, MTB, or in the city.
- Especially on the e-bike it's important: Wear a helmet! You're faster – which increases the risk of accidents.
- Comfort determines the ride: Light, well-ventilated, ergonomic – otherwise cycling is no fun. Modern helmets are precise with the fit!
- Technology makes the bicycle helmet safe – and there are always good, innovative ideas here. WaveCel, MIPS, or adaptive ventilation – new materials and new manufacturing techniques make helmets lighter, more comfortable, and safer.
- Sometimes it's the small things that improve the helmet – for example, reflective fibers in the straps.
- Helmets are becoming more specific: City, gravel bike, or with e-bike standard... there is a suitable helmet for every purpose. ☝️ That's also good because experience shows that there are different falls, accidents, and injuries in different disciplines. If the helmet is adapted, it can protect you better.
💡Tip: Read this blog if you want to inform yourself about bicycle helmets in general – the why, material information, or innovations. Then continue in the online shop, where you will find all the important information about purchasing in the bicycle helmets category.
2. What's new ❓
Material:
- Instead of solid material foam – this brilliant change brings one thing above all: lightness.
- The in-mold construction has prevailed. Here, the inner foam is directly connected to the outer shell, instead of just glued. Guaranteed to hold!
- Honeycomb structures make helmets light yet stable.
- Proprietary techniques make the helmets of individual manufacturers particularly interesting (Leatt's 360° Turbine Tech, for example, see image).
- With bicycles carbon almost an old hat, now the stable and very lightweight material is also arriving in the top segment of bicycle helmets.
- More and more helmets have an antimicrobial interior – hygienically impeccable and odorless, also usually washable.
- Silicone pads at the openings where the glasses are clamped ensure a good hold and a safe and noiseless transport of the glasses.

Shape:
- It's no secret that not only bikes but also helmets are tested in wind tunnels today. Aerodynamics is simply important. Helmets are repeatedly revised to save you the necessary watts for that fraction of a second faster.
- Where to put the bicycle glasses? Good question – you've surely seen athletes clamp the glasses in the helmet – upside down, of course, for better aerodynamics. Manufacturers are picking up on this trend and shaping the ventilation slots so that the glasses' temples fit well.
- Ventilation: Ventilation plays a major role especially in sports, training, and tours. In current models, strategically placed ventilation openings and air channels provide improved cooling. Where a lot of sweat flows, this is particularly important. Now you might think: “Isn't that new!?” You're right – bicycle helmets have had air holes for many years. But in 2026, we actually observe a further improvement in air cooling.
|
❗Here's how it works: Modern materials and innovative construction methods allow the surface of the helmet to be more generously perforated without compromising stability. More air holes with good stability is the result. |
Technology 2026:
- Improved Lighting 1: Lights on the bicycle helmet that can be seen from more than 400 meters? No! Yes! Wow 😲!
- Improved Lighting 2: Visible in all directions – 360° lighting on the helmet is particularly safe.
- Improved Lighting 3: Turn signals and brake lights have been missing on the bike path so far. 2026 helmets can fill this gap.
- Battery Operation: Helmet lights have been around for a while, and with the new model year, almost all models have been switched from battery operation to rechargeable.
- Connectivity: An app for the helmet? That's also available now. This way, you can control the lighting easily from your phone. More on that under “Smart Bicycle Helmets”.
- So far, crash sensors and live trackers not implemented nationwide, but they are available. If you are often outside or traveling alone, it might be worth specifically looking for this feature.
- Synchronizable lighting – flashing in rhythm instead of chaotically causes less confusion.
Bicycle helmet accessories 2026:
- The modern rain cover: Not everyone wants to put a neon yellow bag over their helmet when it rains. The first shaped, aerodynamic rain covers are on the market. They are clipped onto the helmet and seal it like a second outer shell.
- Intercom for retrofitting - connect two bicycle helmets and enjoy not only the ride but also exciting conversations!
🛜 Smart bicycle helmets – Communication is important!
You've already read about the technology – a high-quality bicycle helmet takes a leap towards high-tech in 2026. Some of it is gimmicky, but some features can really improve safety. A illuminated helmet is, for example, a really safe thing!
What is synchronizable lighting?
A cyclist or a group blinking like Christmas lights causes more confusion in traffic. Modern, smart bicycle helmets therefore offer synchronizable lighting. Here, the lamps on the bicycle helmets and also the lights of the bikes can be regulated so that they produce synchronized blinking signals.
Communication
Additionally, there are Bluetooth connections for hands-free kits and speakers. If you don't want to ride with headphones, this is highly recommended, especially if you connect your navigation. This way, you won't miss the directions. The commands from your fitness app can also come directly from the helmet. Our tip: If the bicycle helmet of your choice can't offer the latter, there is the option to establish a connection between two helmets with an intercom set within a limited range.
Trends 2026 🚲 Helmets for different bicycle types
E-Bike
Special E-Bike helmets are mainly available in the city and trekking sectors. In general, E-Bike helmets have improved impact protection. In new models, particularly bright lighting is often found, and many helmets have a visor. This way, you are safe, highly visible, and free from bugs in your eyes even at high speeds.
Road bike
As always... the road bike world wants it lighter. Some road helmets of the 2026 season weigh under 200 grams (but then in small sizes). In general, the material is becoming less, the helmets consist more or less of ventilation openings, because ventilation is the most important feature. Our tip: Look for practical details like holding openings for glasses.
Gravel/Touring
Gravel bike helmets are more or less road bike helmets, but the priority is more on safety in diverse riding situations than on lightweight construction and ventilation. Here too, the lighting is increasingly being perfected so that you are well seen on long tours.
MTB
Stability that offers enough safety while having less weight and sufficient ventilation... that is the goal for current MTB helmets. We are also observing new proprietary safety features. Our tip: For full-face helmets, efforts are being made to make the helmet easier to remove – especially for injured riders. Hopefully, you will never need to use this feature. But pay attention to it when buying, it could save your neck – literally!
City Helmets
Here, there are mainly details that better secure you in city traffic. Integrated lights, reflectors, hands-free systems, or brake lights are important safety guarantees.
3. How much does a modern bicycle helmet weigh?

FAQs Helmet Weight:
You might have wondered what influences the weight of a bicycle helmet? Here are a few important factors:
➽ Does the weight differ in different sizes?
A larger helmet needs more material, logically. But how does this affect the weight?
Example 1: POC Cytal Lite Racing Bike Helmet: Size S 180 grams – Size M 200 grams – Size L 220 grams
Example 2: FOX RACING Rampage MTB Fullface Helmet: Size S 1130 grams – Size M 1130 grams – Size XL 1255 grams
➽ Does the price have an influence?
You probably already guessed it – high-end helmets are lighter. But also more expensive. Here are two examples – similar helmet, but different prices:
|
Bicycle Helmet Model |
RRP |
Weight |
|
POC Ventral Air (Road Bike) |

5. Do you need a new bike helmet in 2026?
Why should you buy a new bike helmet this year? Here are a few good reasons:
- Did you know…? Bike helmets have an expiration date!
|
For 2026, this means you need to replace your bike helmet if it was manufactured in 2021 or earlier. |
- New helmets sweep well. Okay, they don't sweep. But you're more likely to wear a stylish new helmet than the sweaty, slightly dented bowl from last year.
- If your helmet has fallen or even survived a crash, you should replace it.
- You read above what modern 2026 helmets can do. Maybe you want more safety or improved communication with your fellow riders? Then a new helmet is due.
6. Children's bike helmets – what you need to know
Children's bike helmets are usually replaced because they no longer fit. If you're looking for a new children's helmet, the question arises: What really makes sense on a children's helmet? A hands-free system? A crash sensor? Children are usually not out for long and not alone. Therefore, a good helmet (possibly with MIPS, etc.) is a good purchase, but it's perfectly okay to buy a simple brand helmet with a standard seal and without much frills.

🔎 FAQs
How much does a good bicycle helmet cost?
You can buy simple bicycle helmets from renowned manufacturers starting at about 50 euros. In the sale, it's even cheaper. For a good, lightweight, and well-ventilated road bike helmet, you should not shop for less than 150 euros. Top MTB helmets from 2026 cost around 250 euros, and for a current full-face helmet, you will need to pay about 300 to 500 euros. Light, illuminated, and with a Bluetooth interface – if you want these features in a city bike helmet, you should expect to pay around 250 euros, without these features it will be significantly cheaper.
Are expensive bicycle helmets safer?
All bicycle helmets sold in Europe must meet certain safety standards. And these standards are also met by inexpensive helmets. If you buy an inexpensive helmet from a good brand, it is tested and safe. If it comes with technologies like WaveCel or MIPS, it is safer. With lighting and so on, it meets the current possible safety requirements optimally.
Can you buy an older helmet or a used helmet?
We would rather advise against it. The used helmet may already be damaged and no longer provide full impact protection. Older helmets may not be safe anymore due to material aging.
Which standard is important?
- In the EU, a bicycle helmet for adults must meet the standard EN 1078.
- For children's helmets, a special standard applies, look for EN 1080.
- For e-bikes and S-pedelecs, the NTA standard 8776 applies.
Our purchase tip: When in doubt, it's smarter to have the safe helmet! If you ride E and Bio – buy the helmet with the e-bike standard!
Illuminated helmets – answers to frequently asked questions
How does the brake light on the bicycle helmet work?
The brake light is controlled by a motion sensor that detects changes in speed.
How does the turn signal on the bicycle helmet work?
A turn signal is integrated into your helmet, but how does it know you want to turn? The helmet only knows if you tell it. For this, there is a remote control that you attach to the handlebars.
Are flashing lights allowed?
Since a change in the StVZO, flashing lights on bicycles and bicycle helmets are allowed, but not mandatory.
|
Attention! According to experience, drivers are not yet familiar with these technologies! Therefore, you should always give additional hand signals. |
How long does the helmet light battery last?
Of course, it depends on how much battery capacity the manufacturer installs - an important point, because large battery = long runtime ➽ but a lot of weight. Especially on the helmet, as little weight as possible is a real advantage. Depending on the battery capacity, the helmet light lasts about 10 hours in flashing mode and 2.5 hours in continuous operation. Other important factors: how bright are the lamps and how many LEDs are installed. Our tip: If you want to ride with light on the helmet for as long as possible, you should compare the product descriptions, there are differences here.
How long does the bicycle helmet need to charge?
You should expect a charging time of 3 to 6 hours.
