This means they used a smaller, consistent difference (13 teeth) between the chainrings, while SRAM gives the cassettes a larger gear range (up to 10-36 or 360%!). This means you can stay on the same chainring longer and need fewer front shifts, which are inherently less efficient than rear shifts. And when a front shift is performed, the smaller jump is smoother and allows you to reach the right cadence with fewer compensatory shifts at the back.
