The revamped version of the iXS Trigger AM half-shell helmet for all-mountain and trail use is now equipped with the MIPS system, providing more safety in the event of a fall.
Very pleasing, as an extra dose of safety in the MTB area is always good in a helmet! We took a close look at the newly developed iXS Trigger AM + Mips and tested it intensively for you.
General information about the iXS Trigger AM Mips
The popular iXS helmet models Trigger FF (Full Face) and Trigger AM (AllMountain, half-shell helmet) have received some updates from the manufacturer and will now be delivered (also) with the MIPS brain protection system. Also… because the system is optional, you can still buy the MTB helmet without Mips. We grabbed the iXS Trigger AM with Mips, it is recommended for AM (All Mountain) and trail mountain bikers.
Here you will find all important information about the revised helmet, our test report and a conclusion at the very end.
- The iXS Trigger AM has a total of 19 ventilation openings in the helmet shell, allowing for perfect air circulation. The ventilation channels are arranged so that the airflow is directed from front to back, ensuring a cooling effect at all times.
- Also with the visor of the Trigger AM Mips iXS has put some thought into it, you can snap it into three different positions. This is good for adjusting the position to the sun's position, and you can park an unused goggle on your forehead.
- The helmet closure features the magnetic Fidlock system and can be easily closed and opened with one hand and while wearing gloves.
- The Trigger AM bicycle helmet is available in several colours. The version we tested in orange is unfortunately no longer available for purchase.

Honestly – the iXS Trigger just looks good!
The iXS Trigger AM MIPS: Helmet sizes & adjustment
You can buy the Trigger in two different sizes, it is available in the double sizes S/M and M/L. You can adjust the helmet horizontally over the head ring to fit your head circumference as usual. Of course, the chin strap is also adjusted accordingly.

The Ergo Fit Ultra adjustment system at the back allows for vertical and horizontal adjustment, so that the iXS Trigger AM can be perfectly adjusted to any head.
In contrast to other helmets, the Trigger AM offers the possibility to change the size vertically. Inside the helmet, you can fix the ErgoFit Ultra holding system at three different positions and thus perfectly adjust the helmet. A fine thing, as the times when the helmet slips into your field of vision from above are definitely over!

iXS Trigger AM offers more safety thanks to Mips & Inmould
iXS has packed a lot of technology into the new edition of the Trigger helmet that protects you in an accident and also increases wearing comfort. Here we present two innovative details:

The inside of the iXS Trigger is softly padded and comfortable to wear. The yellow logo tells you: The MTB helmet also features the (invisible) MIPS system.
What is MIPS?
The latest edition of the iXS Trigger AM is optionally equipped with the Mips Brain-Protection-System . Mips has been used in many helmets for several years, and its outstanding protective effect has been proven many times. Here's how it works: Two layers in the helmet shell are not glued together; they can slide against each other in the event of an impact. In the event of a fall on the head, the rotational forces are distributed over a larger area, significantly reducing localized impact and the likelihood of serious brain or skull injury decreases.
The iXS Inmould system ensures a cool head
Have you ever sweated profusely under a MTB helmet? Thanks to the iXS Inmould technology that is a thing of the past! According to the manufacturer, the Inmould system improves ventilation while maintaining protective effectiveness. The outer shell of the helmet is directly connected to the shock-absorbing EPS material inside, giving the Trigger helmet stability, but it can still be perforated for numerous ventilation openings. The ventilation openings are arranged so that an airflow can be created, providing a pleasant climate around the head.
The features of the iXS Trigger AM at a glance:
- the AM version is recommended for all mountain and trail
- for all the rough fun in the terrain (downhill, Enduro, etc.) there is the FF (Full Face) version
- available in two sizes and 9 colours
- ErgoFit Ultra interior for an optimal fit
- Unisex, suitable for both men and women
- available with Mips and without
- numerous ventilation openings
- Magnetic closure, which can be operated with one hand
- Weight: 428 grams (in size M/L)
- RRP: Expect around 130 euros for a helmet without Mips and 189 euros for the Mips MTB helmet
The iXS Trigger AM Mips in the Bike Mailorder test
The features sound really great, but can the Trigger AM also convince in practice? To find out, we tested the new iXS Trigger AM Mips intensively over several weeks and would like to share our test impressions with you.
The Trigger AM feels good…
… and that even before the first meters in the MTB saddle!
|
Even when unpacking the helmet, we noticed the weight – the Trigger AM is really very light. A look at the scale confirms our impression, as in size M/L the helmet weighs only 428 grams. |
Pleasing, as experience shows that a helmet of this weight class is hardly noticeable even on long tours and can be worn all day without neck pain, headaches, or pressure points.
The fit
Of course, the fit is particularly important for a helmet, as it can be innovative and full of modern safety technology, but if it doesn't fit properly, it quickly ends up in the corner. iXS has equipped the revised Trigger AM with generous padding, and thus the helmet sits very comfortably on the head. The pads are placed in the right spots and fit snugly around the head without exerting pressure. The adjustment with the ErgoFit Ultra system is so simple and precise – with the adjustment wheel, the helmet can be optimally adjusted to the head in no time.

For the vertical adjustment of the ErgoFit Ultra system, you can fix the support struts in one of three possible positions.
The vertical adjustment option of the ErgoFit Ultra system is somewhat hidden; if you want to adjust the helmet in height, you need to detach the inner padding from the Velcro and reposition the support struts underneath.
iXS Trigger AM in the test: Let's go!
Now that our helmet is perfectly adjusted, the trail fun can finally begin. We tested our Trigger AM over the winter, which is a good time because when it's wet and slippery, a good bicycle helmet is particularly valuable. On the other hand, the bike parks were still closed, so we tested the iXS Trigger AM Mips on our rather shorter home trails and still tackled everything from sharp descents to endurance climbs that is fun.
When climbing, the 19 ventilation openings make a positive difference. Of course, when pedalling uphill, you hardly feel any airflow, but the cold winter air could noticeably circulate around the head. During the subsequent descent, the airflow sweeps around the head almost unhindered. Our test rounds took place at temperatures around freezing point; under these conditions, the ventilation was almost too good, but a thin multifunctional scarf over the ears fits easily under the helmet and provides relief here.
The Trigger helmet with glasses and/or goggles
Especially downhill-oriented riders often wear mountain bike goggles when riding all-mountain and trail. The adjustable visor is very helpful here, as it provides enough space in the highest position to wear the goggle “on the forehead”.

With the visor raised, there is enough space to place large goggles on the forehead.
Does the Trigger work in a fall?
Fortunately, we didn't have to test the fall suitability, but it just feels good to be out and about with a modern bicycle helmet that offers more safety thanks to Mips technology than older versions.

Stylish and full of useful functions – the iXS Trigger AM convinces on many levels!
The Trail Helmet Trigger in the test – Our conclusion
The new iXS Trigger AM Mips is packed with features that provide more safety in the event of a fall and excellent wearing comfort. The fit and handling impress from the very first second, and the workmanship is – as expected for a helmet in this price range – high quality. Big plus points are the Mips brain protection and ventilation system. We can absolutely recommend the lightweight all-mountain and trail helmet and are sure that you will also enjoy your new head protection. In fact, we would like torecommend the version with Mips. It is significantly more expensive than without, and we hope that you will never experience the difference firsthand. But in case of an accident, the extra euros are definitely well invested!
