For years, the Spanish bicycle manufacturer Orbea has been one of the premium brands here in the BMO online shop. Reason enough to take a closer look at the store.
From the beginning, Orbea processed metal, but bicycles only appeared on the production plan later. The brand grew from a small arms factory to a significant manufacturer of mountain, road, and city bikes. E-bikes are, of course, also part of the range now. Here you will find a bit of company history, and we will introduce you to the individual bikes.
From gunslinger to Tour de France stage winner
Orbea was founded in 1840 and is thus one of the oldest bicycle companies. In the Spanish town of Eibar, the brothers Juan Manuel, Mateo, and Casimiro founded a small arms factory for the manufacture of revolvers and pistols. During World War I, demand exploded, and "Orbea Hermanos" experienced a tremendous boom, refining the know-how in pipe manufacturing over the years.
When the arms business lost profitability, pipes continued to be processed, but from 1920 onwards, bicycles were produced. Under the new leadership of racing bike idol Mariano Cañardo, the brand became “Bicicletas Orbea”. After economically difficult times, the end of the company was narrowly averted with the help of a takeover by the employees and the founding of a cooperative, and the brand Orbea continued to develop and grow steadily. The location in Eibar could not keep up with this growth, so the company moved to the town of Mallabia in the late 1960s and expanded there.

🏆 City, Road & MTB – Successes in the bicycle market
The great success of the leisure bikes “Yovana”, “Gua gua” and “Furia” allowed Orbea to grow into a fixed institution in the bicycle market. This upswing of the manufacturer also brought about a return to road cycling.
Orbea wins in modern top sports
In 1985, a year after returning to competition, the team “Gin MG-Orbea” celebrated its first major successes at the Tour de France and brought the Orbea racing bikes into all media.
Shortly thereafter, the first Orbea mountain bikes began their victorious march. The adventurous mountain flyers made a significant impact on the bicycle market in the late 1980s when the mountain bike wave from the USA swept over to Europe and was able to establish itself here, among other things, thanks to Orbea.

Today, the company headquarters is still in Mallabia, where up to 250,000 bicycles are produced annually. The name Orbea stands for quality and design at the highest level throughout the bicycle market. The Basque Country is a bicycle country, and cycling is at home here. In 2020, the Basques competed with a victorious Enduro team, led by the three-time vice-champion of the Enduro World Series, Damien Oton. Alongside Oton were the young Slovenian Vid Persak and the Spanish riders Gabriel Torralba and Edgar Carballo. On the elegant Enduro bike RALLON or Orbea's trail bike OCCAM, the team riders achieved impressive victories.
The machines are, of course, also available to the general public. The mountain bikes are all very well equipped and attract attention with their asymmetric frame design.
