There, it houses the connection of the two crank arms, allowing them to rotate so you can pedal efficiently. Which one is correct? Actually, both are correct; the term “\u003cstrong\u003ebottom bracket\u003c\/strong\u003e” was common in the past, but today these bike parts are generally referred to as \u003cstrong\u003ebottom brackets\u003c\/strong\u003e, although the actual bearing – depending on the design – often lies outside the frame. Since many cyclists are still looking for a bottom bracket, we also use this name here. Bottom brackets have changed a lot over the years, becoming lighter and more efficient, but unfortunately, numerous variations have emerged along the way, differing greatly from manufacturer to manufacturer and needing to fit both the frame and the crank.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eThe history of the bottom bracket\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn older bicycles, the two crank arms and the axle between them were a bent metal rod, which was very practical and low-maintenance, but this system added a lot of weight. Thus, the crank arms, crankshaft, and bearing became separate components, each of which was gradually weight-optimized. The first bottom brackets with exposed unsealed ball bearings were an improvement, but unfortunately, they did not spoil their owners with long service life. The commonly used \u003cstrong\u003ecartridge bearings\u003c\/strong\u003e today are light \u003cem\u003eand\u003c\/em\u003e fully sealed, giving them a significantly longer lifespan.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eThe bottom bracket is a wear part\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe bottom bracket (or bottom bracket) has to withstand a lot. All your muscle power works on the crank, and when you work your way up a hill in a standing position, your body weight rests on the pedals, then on the crank arms, and thus on the bottom bracket. Additionally, it is constantly exposed to friction and, like all parts \"at the bottom\" of the bike, it gets plenty of water, dust, road salt, and so on. To be screwed in, the bottom bracket shell has a visible thread, the counterpart to which can be seen on the bottom bracket.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003cstrong\u003eThreadless bottom brackets\u003c\/strong\u003e are pressed into the frame. To purchase a bottom bracket that fits into the bottom bracket shell, you can find them in the online shop matching different shell standards (= diameter). There is also a \u003cstrong\u003efilter\u003c\/strong\u003e that narrows the selection to models that match your search.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIf you are looking for a replacement part for a worn-out bottom bracket, the easiest way is to examine the old one closely, as the dimensions are often embossed there. \u003cstrong\u003eReplacing a worn-out bottom bracket with an identical new one is indeed the safest choice!\u003c\/strong\u003e If none is available, you can also measure the width and diameter using a ruler or a caliper (which you can find in our \u003cstrong\u003emeasuring instruments\u003c\/strong\u003e) \u003cstrong\u003emeasure\u003c\/strong\u003e. If you look closely, you can also do this with the mounted bottom bracket, just be sure not to measure the external bearing cups and any existing spacers.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch4\u003eAccessories make bottom brackets fit\u003c\/h4\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWith \u003cstrong\u003eadapters or spacers\u003c\/strong\u003e, you can adapt a smaller bottom bracket to the frame, and you can find them in the \u003cstrong\u003ebottom bracket accessories\u003c\/strong\u003e. Of course, it doesn't work the other way around; a too-large bottom bracket is and remains too large.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBSA, ITA, or French refer to \u003cstrong\u003edifferent thread sizes and directions\u003c\/strong\u003e, i.e., the TPI (number of thread turns) and left-handed or right-handed threads.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch4\u003e68mm and 73mm\u003c\/h4\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e68mm and 73mm are particularly common bottom bracket widths found on many bicycles. On many... but not all!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch4\u003eAre there bottom brackets specifically for MTBs and road bikes?\u003c\/h4\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor \u003cstrong\u003emountain bikes\u003c\/strong\u003e, robust, wide bottom brackets are built to fit into the correspondingly large-volume enduro, trail, or freeride frames (89.5mm to 92mm width). Even among bottom brackets, the largest components – as usual – are found in the downhill sector (104.5mm to 107mm). For \u003cstrong\u003eroad bikes\u003c\/strong\u003e, dimensions and weight are at the lower end of the scale (e.g., 86.5mm width), while \u003cstrong\u003etrekking\u003c\/strong\u003e and \u003cstrong\u003ecity bikes\u003c\/strong\u003e fall somewhere in between.
