Small particles act like a file between the bicycle chain, crank, and cassette, and you literally have sand in the gears. This accelerates wear and tears at the not-so-cheap components until eventually, replacements are due. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eBut here’s the good news\u003c\/strong\u003e: It’s not that hard to do something about it! Here you will learn how and with which means you can properly clean and care for your bike. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eAll important tips are summarized again briefly and concisely in Questions \u0026amp; Answers at the very end.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eStep 1: Cleaning\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eHow often you need to wash your bicycle\u003c\/strong\u003e depends on where, how often, and through how much dirt you ride. Some bikes need a shower more often, others only need to be cleaned once a year. Especially off-road bikes – mountain bikes and gravel bikes – like to come back from playing with a thick crust of mud. The quicker you remove it, the better!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFirst, the bike is rinsed off, and with a bit of luck, the coarsest dirt will drip off immediately. If the mud hasn't completely dried yet, this works best and without further scrubbing – to protect the bike's paint, you shouldn't wait too long with the \u003cstrong\u003erinsing\u003c\/strong\u003e! Whether you use a hose, a watering can, or a bucket doesn't matter. A pump sprayer from the garden market also works perfectly. Then you can apply a \u003cstrong\u003ebicycle cleaner\u003c\/strong\u003e. How this is done depends on the product of your choice, usually, it is simply sprayed on. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBicycle cleaners dissolve dried mud and grease residues. After a short exposure time, the whole mess can usually be simply \u003cstrong\u003erinsed off\u003c\/strong\u003e. If not, you can repeat the procedure. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIf a more thorough bicycle washing action is due, brakes, drivetrain, and suspension elements are treated separately before rinsing.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e\u0026gt; Cleaning the brakes is absolutely vital; \u003c\/strong\u003eif things go really wrong, dirty brakes can even fail completely! But luckily, cleaning rim brakes or disc brakes is not difficult. If you have rim brakes, usually there is nothing more to do than clean the rims and ensure that no leaves\/grass\/sticks are stuck in the brake caliper. Heavily soiled disc brakes, on the other hand, need special treatment with brake cleaner. This is also sprayed on or applied with a soft cloth and then rinsed off or wiped off. You can also check the wear and, if necessary, install new \u003cstrong\u003ebrake pads\u003c\/strong\u003e or \u003cstrong\u003ebrake linings\u003c\/strong\u003e. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e\u0026gt; For cleaning the bicycle drivetrain\u003c\/strong\u003e  there are not only special products (drive cleaners) but also devices that help you with it. A chain cleaning device removes all the dirt from the chain, special brushes help with the fine work on the various gears, the derailleur, and the shifter. For the spaces between the sprockets, there are particularly narrow brushes. While you're at it, you can also check with a chain wear gauge to see if a new \u003cstrong\u003echain\u003c\/strong\u003e is due or if the teeth on the crankset and sprockets are already heavily worn.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e\u0026gt; Washing a bike with suspension\u003c\/strong\u003e requires a bit more caution. Since the stanchion (on the suspension fork) and the sliding surface (on the frame damper) could push all sorts of dirt past the seal into the stanchion when compressing, they should be cleaned particularly well. However, the water jet should not be directed directly at the stanchion, as too much pressure could cause particles and water to penetrate the damper.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eA few more tips:\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cul\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003cstrong\u003eHousehold cleaners\u003c\/strong\u003e have no place on a bike; only bike cleaners are formulated so that they do not damage the paint and other surfaces of the bike.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eUnfortunately, not all care products for bicycles are \u003cstrong\u003ebiodegradable\u003c\/strong\u003e yet, but more and more are becoming available. To prevent the drive, stanchions, and brake discs from developing flash rust, you can help with a soft cloth here.\u003c\/p\u003e \n\u003ch3\u003eStep 3: Grease it up!\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn all lubrication tasks, you should ensure that no lubricant gets on the \u003cstrong\u003ebrakes\u003c\/strong\u003e, as grease can ruin brake discs and pads, and then you'll have to replace both.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOnce everything is completely dry, the chain is oiled with a drive grease. A care spray seals the frame and prevents new dirt from sticking, forming a layer that protects the paint from scratches and allows water to bead off. Optionally, a gloss spray can make your bike shine, but you can also spray on a matte finish.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBy the way, there are \u003cstrong\u003edifferent lubricants\u003c\/strong\u003e! With chain grease and chain wax, you lubricate the drive around the bicycle chain. However, \u003cstrong\u003echain lubrication\u003c\/strong\u003e should not be confused with lubricants for suspension elements (i.e., the shock absorbers and the suspension fork) and assembly lubrication! “One for all” doesn't work well on the bike!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eSpecial case E-bike: How to properly clean your E-bike\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBefore washing a new pedelec, you can leaf through the user manual. There are often instructions on proper cleaning and maintenance. First, you should remove parts that are not permanently mounted. This means that the \u003cstrong\u003ebattery\u003c\/strong\u003e, if it is not built into the frame, and the \u003cstrong\u003edisplay\u003c\/strong\u003e should be removed. You can cover the contact points with painter's tape, and you should also cover the keyhole of the battery lock.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAfterwards, the E-bike is washed just like a bicycle, although some manufacturers offer special \u003cstrong\u003eE-bike cleaners.\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOnce the E-bike is shining again, the taped-off connectors are uncovered and carefully cleaned and dried with a cloth. Only when the contacts are clean and completely dry can you reinstall the electronics. With an E-bike with an integrated battery, you should check the battery compartment. You do yourself and others a favor by being environmentally conscious and opting for eco-friendly products with bike cleaners.
