Trail Helm iXS Trigger Test

Kai |

The revamped edition of the iXS Trigger AM half-shell helmet for all-mountain and trail use is now equipped with the MIPS system, providing more safety in the event of a crash.

Very pleasing, because especially in the MTB sector, an extra portion of safety in the helmet is always good! We took a close look at the newly developed iXS Trigger AM + Mips and tested it intensively for you.

General Information about the iXS Trigger AM Mips

The popular iXS helmet models Trigger FF (Full Face) and Trigger AM (AllMountain, Half-shell Helmet) have received some updates from the manufacturer and will now also be delivered with the MIPS Brain-Protection-System. Also... because the system is optional, you can still buy the MTB helmet without Mips. We grabbed the iXS Trigger AM with Mips, it is recommended for AM (All Mountain) and Trail mountain bikers.

Here you will find all the important information about the revised helmet, our test report, and a conclusion at the very end.

  • The iXS Trigger AM has a total of 19 ventilation openings in the helmet shell, allowing for perfect air circulation. The ventilation channels are arranged in such a way that the airflow is directed from front to back, always achieving a cooling effect.
  • Also, the visor of the Trigger AM Mips has been thoughtfully designed by iXS, allowing you to lock it in three different positions. This is good for adjusting the position to the sun's position, and you can also park an unused goggle on the forehead.
  • The helmet closure features the magnetic Fidlock system and can be effortlessly opened and closed with one hand and with gloves.
  • The Trigger AM bicycle helmet is available in several colors. The version we tested in orange is unfortunately no longer available for purchase.

The Ergo Fit Ultra adjustment system at the back of the head allows for vertical and horizontal adjustment, so that the iXS Trigger AM Mips can be perfectly adapted to any head.

Unlike other helmets, the Trigger AM offers the possibility to change the size vertically as well. Inside the helmet, you can fix the ErgoFit Ultra retention system in three different positions and thus perfectly adjust the helmet. A fine thing, because with this, the times when the helmet slips into your field of vision from above are definitely over!

iXS Trigger AM offers more safety thanks to Mips & Inmould

iXS has packed a lot of technology into the new edition of the Trigger helmet that protects you in an accident and also increases wearing comfort. Here we present two innovative details:

The interior of the iXS Trigger is softly padded and comfortable to wear. The yellow logo tells you: The MTB helmet additionally features the (invisible) MIPS system.

What is MIPS?

The latest edition of the iXS Trigger AM is optionally equipped with the Mips Brain-Protection-System . Mips has been in use in many helmets for several years, and its superior protective effect has been proven many times. Here's how it works: Two layers in the helmet shell are not glued together, they can move against each other in the event of an impact. In a fall on the head, the rotational forces are distributed over a larger area, a point impact can thus be significantly minimized and the probability of a serious brain or skull injury decreases.

The iXS Inmould System ensures a cool head

Have you ever sweated really badly under an MTB helmet? Thanks to the iXS Inmould Technology that's over! According to the manufacturer, the Inmould system improves ventilation, while maintaining the protective effect. The helmet outer shell is directly connected to the shock-absorbing EPS material inside, thus the Trigger helmet gains stability, but can still allow for numerous ventilation openings. be interrupted. The  ventilation openings  are arranged in such a way that an airflow can be created, ensuring a pleasant climate around the head.

The iXS Trigger AM Mips in the Bike Mailorder test

The features indeed read well, but can the Trigger AM also convince in practice? To find out, we have intensively tested the new iXS Trigger AM Mips over several weeks and would like to share our test impression with you.

    The Trigger AM feels good…

… and that even before the first meters in the MTB saddle!

Even when unpacking the helmet, we noticed the weight – the Trigger AM is really very light. A look at the scale confirms our impression, because in size M/L the helmet weighs only 428 grams

Pleasing, because from experience, a helmet of this weight class is not noticeable even on long tours and can be worn all day without neck pain, headaches, or pressure points.

    The Fit

Particularly important for a helmet is of course the fit, because it can be so innovative and full of modern safety technology, if it doesn't fit properly, it quickly ends up in the corner. iXS has equipped the revised Trigger AM with generous padding and so the helmet sits very comfortably on the head. The pads are placed in the right spots and lie cleanly around the head without exerting pressure. The adjustment with the ErgoFit Ultra System is so simple and precise – with the adjustment wheel, the helmet can be optimally adjusted to the head in no time.

the vertical adjustment of the MTB helmet in close-up

For the vertical adjustment of the ErgoFit Ultra System, you can fix the support struts in one of three possible positions.

The vertical adjustment possibility of the ErgoFit Ultra System is somewhat hidden, if you want to adjust the helmet in height, you have to detach the inner pad from the Velcro and reposition the underlying support struts.

iXS Trigger AM in the test: Let's go!

Now that our helmet is perfectly adjusted, the trail fun can finally start. We tested our Trigger AM over the winter, on one hand a good time, because when it's wet and slippery, a good bike helmet is particularly valuable. On the other hand, the bike parks were still closed, so we have the  iXS Trigger AM Mips tested on our rather shorter home trails and still tackled everything from crisp descents to enduring climbs that are fun with the treads.

When riding uphill, the 19 ventilation openings are noticeably beneficial. Of course, there is hardly any wind to feel when pedaling uphill, but the cold winter air could circulate noticeably around the head. During the subsequent descent, the wind sweeps almost unhindered around our heads. Our test rounds took place at temperatures around freezing point, under these conditions the ventilation was almost too good, but a thin multifunctional scarf over the ears fits easily under the helmet and provides relief here.

The Trigger helmet with glasses and/or goggles

Especially downhill-oriented riders often wear mountain bike goggles when all-mountain and trail riding. This is where the adjustable visor comes in handy, as it offers enough space in the highest position to wear the goggles “on the forehead”.

the iXS Trail MTB Helmet with Goggles

With the visor flipped up, there is enough space to place large goggles on the forehead.

Does the Trigger work in a crash?

Fortunately, we didn't have to test the crash suitability, but it just feels good to be on the road with a modern bicycle helmet that offers more safety thanks to Mips technology than older versions.

Stylish and full of useful features – the iXS Trigger AM Mips convinces on many levels!

The Trail Helmet Trigger in the test – Our conclusion

The new iXS Trigger AM Mips is packed with features that ensure more safety in the event of a crash and excellent wearing comfort. The fit and handling convince from the first second and the workmanship is – as expected from a helmet in this price range – high quality. Big plus points are the Mips brain protection and the ventilation system. We can absolutely recommend the lightweight all-mountain and trail helmet to you and are sure that you will also enjoy your new head protection. In fact, we would like to recommend the version with Mips to you . It is indeed significantly more expensive than without, and we wish you never have to experience the difference firsthand. But in case of an emergency, the additional euros are certainly well invested!
