For years, the Spanish bicycle manufacturer Orbea has been one of the premium brands here in the BMO Online Shop. Reason enough to take a closer look at the store.
From the beginning, metal was processed at Orbea, but bicycles were only added to the production plan later. The brand grew from a small arms factory to a significant manufacturer of mountain, road, and city bikes. Of course, e-bikes are now also included. Here you will find a bit of company history, and we introduce you to the individual bikes.
From Gunslinger to Tour de France Stage Winner
Orbea was founded in 1840 and is thus one of the oldest bicycle companies. In Eibar, Spain, the brothers Juan Manuel, Mateo, and Casimiro founded a small arms factory for the production of revolvers and pistols. During World War I, demand exploded, and "Orbea Hermanos" experienced a tremendous upswing, with their expertise in tubing manufacturing being refined over the years.
When the arms business lost profitability, pipes were still processed, but from 1920 onwards into bicycles. Under the new leadership of racing idol Mariano Cañardo, the brand became "Bicicletas Orbea". After economically tough times, the end of the company was narrowly averted through an employee takeover and the establishment of a cooperative, and the Orbea brand continued to develop and grow steadily. The location in Eibar could not keep up with this growth, so the company moved to the city of Mallabia at the end of the 1960s and expanded there.

🏆 City, Road & MTB – Successes in the Bicycle Market
The great success of the leisure bikes "Yovana", "Gua gua", and "Furia" made Orbea a fixture in the bicycle market. This upswing of the manufacturer also brought about a return to road racing.
Orbea Triumphs in Modern Elite Sport
In 1985, a year after returning to competition, the "Gin MG-Orbea" team celebrated their first major successes at the Tour de France with the exceptional athlete Pedro Delgado, bringing Orbea racing bikes into all the media.
Shortly thereafter, the triumph of the first Orbea mountain bikes began. The adventurous mountain racers stirred up the bicycle market tremendously at the end of the 80s, as the mountain bike wave from the USA swept into Europe and, among others, thanks to Orbea, was able to establish itself here.

Today, the company headquarters is still located in Mallabia, where up to 250,000 bicycles are manufactured annually. After the initial successes in road cycling, Orbea also ventured to attack the global podiums in mountain sports. In 2020, the Basques competed with a victorious enduro team, led by the three-time runner-up of the Enduro World Series, Damien Oton. Alongside Oton were the young Slovenian Vid Persak and the Spanish riders Gabriel Torralba and Edgar Carballo. The team riders achieved remarkable victories on the noble Enduro Bike RALLON or Orbeas Trailbike OCCAM.
The machines are, of course, also available to the general public. The mountain bikes are overall very high-quality equipped and attract attention with their asymmetrical frame design.
