What is an SUV e-bike?

SUV E-Bike

Kai |

Are you looking for a robust, powerful e-bike that's not afraid of anything? There is: The E-Bike SUV. The term has been borrowed by e-bikes from cars, where the mix of everyday vehicle and off-road vehicle has long existed and is referred to as a Sports Utility Vehicle – SUV. Bike-SUVs bring another quality that their owners particularly appreciate, which you will find out shortly.

As always, when it comes to bicycles, the designation depends on the manufacturer, which is why there are different names for these pedelecs. E-Bike SUVs can also be called All-Terrain Bikes or Crossover Bikes – and all three names fit well with the characteristics of these bikes!

  • They work in (almost) any terrain, so they are All-Terrain.
  • They combine sport and practicality in everyday life (Sport + Utility).
  • And they are usually a mix of different e-bikes. So a Crossover from eMTB Fully and trekking bike, from city e-bikes and hardtail or from e-touring bike and city bike.

What can e-bikes with SUV equipment do?

When is an e-bike an SUV? Quite simply, it depends on its features:

  • You can recognize SUV e-bikes by their bulky appearance. SUV e-bikes are not only robust, they also look that way. No trace of lightweight construction…
  • The E-SUV bike is resilient, meaning it has a stable frame and durable components, plus these e-bikes are well made to withstand a variety of demands.
  • E-Bike SUVs work on the road and in the terrain.
  • They score with lots of load capacity.
  • These e-bikes come with everything you need for your safety and what is required in public road traffic.
  • Not only is the equipment solid, but the driving style also feels safe and stable.
  • Their stable driving style, robust construction, and full equipment make SUV e-bikes above all one thing: extra safe!
  • Large drives ensure proper propulsion.
  • The geo and ergonomic features make an SUV e-bike wonderfully comfortable (and this is also the feature that many cyclists particularly love about their e-SUV).

The advantages at a glance:

❎ robust and durable

❎ versatile and rideable on many surfaces

❎ stable driving style

❎ large load capacity

❎ full equipment

❎ comfortable

❎ generously motorized

Overall, an SUV e-bike is a mix of the features of an e-MTB with the riding comfort of a trekking bike and the practical full equipment of a city e-bike. You often won't find SUVs in their own category in shops; they are sorted with trekking e-bikes, eMTBs, and city e-bikes.

Road or terrain – the SUV e-bike can do both!

The big advantage of the e-bike in SUV style is that it is fun everywhere. On the road, on cobblestones, on field and forest paths, and even in terrain. For this, it is robust and built for off-road use. To ensure you are safe in road traffic, it also has the appropriate equipment for that. Safety includes not only lights and good brakes. A secure road position is also important, and the SUV bike naturally offers that as well! And last but not least, it has a luggage rack and a lot of loading capacity so you can load the necessary luggage for tours. Another important point is comfort! If you want to go on long tours, a comfortable sitting posture, an ergonomic handlebar, and a comfortable saddle are prerequisites!

❄️ The SUV is the perfect bike for bad weather!

Versatility in the e-bike SUV also means that it works in any weather. It has mudguards that keep you clean and dry, making rainy days much more pleasant. Wetness is not only annoying on the bike, but it is also always a risk, as it gets slippery. The SUV can offer you maximum safety here. With the grippy and not too narrow tires, the bike has good traction, and the stable handling helps you keep on track even on slippery ground. Good brakes are very helpful on wet roads, and since the SUV has hydraulic disc brakes, you can be sure that you can brake well and in a controlled manner even when wet. Overall, such an e-bike is also the perfect choice for everyone who rides a bike in winter.

✅ The equipment of the SUV e-bike

An SUV e-bike usually has full equipment. This means you get all the bike parts and attachments that are available and that you might need on the go.

  • There is a luggage rack that helps you store your belongings. Whether you go on a big tour with bicycle bags, attach a child seat, or mount a bicycle basket for a backpack and handbag, is up to you. In any case, there is a rack as a "trunk".
  • A good bicycle lighting is firstly mandatory and secondly very important for your safety. The SUV bike comes with it.
  • Fenders are mandatory. Whether you are plowing through puddles or want to ride to work in the rain, they are undoubtedly part of the all-round carefree equipment.
  • You just read it - ergonomics are taken into account with saddles, handlebars, and grips.

With the SUV E-Bike, you are always on the safe side on public roads, because the equipment usually includes all the parts required by the StVZO.

You will find these bicycle parts on the SUV E-Bike

Terrain and city, asphalt and loose surfaces, gravel, sandy soils, and trails or cobblestones and dirt roads - AllTerrain is taken seriously with the SUV E-Bike. For it to work well, the bike must have the right components.

  • the right tires
  • a suspension fork
  • possibly a frame damper
  • good brakes
  • the right gear system

The components of the E SUV-Bike in detail:

This is the tire your E-SUV bike comes with

Not too narrow and not too wide, the tires on the SUV are a good compromise between propulsion, grip, and damping. The tires can reach the massive width and generous profile typical of mountain bikes. Even for SUV bikes for the city, the tires are often larger than on regular city E-bikes. Many SUV E-bikes come with large, grippy trekking tires about 50mm wide and with a moderate profile. They work everywhere and in all weather. If you really want to scrub through the terrain, you can upgrade. For the city and developed paths, you can downsize; slightly narrower tires and less profile are sufficient here.

The suspension fork

Almost all SUV E-bikes have a suspension fork. This is simply part of the riding comfort, and it also improves road holding on uneven surfaces. The more off-road you want to ride, the more travel the fork should have.

Does an SUV E-Bike need a frame damper?

Not every E SUV bike has a frame damper. Whether it needs one depends on whether you really want to ride off-road or not.

The frame damper smooths out particularly poor surfaces; truly technical terrain only works "with". On the other hand, the bike becomes significantly heavier, more expensive, and more maintenance-intensive with a fully suspended frame construction. It also rides less efficiently.

Therefore, it is worth considering carefully whether the damper in the frame is really worth it for you!

Good brakes are a must!

Since the bikes are generally heavier, particularly good brakes are installed. These are usually hydraulic disc brakes; you will rarely encounter mechanical stoppers.

Gears on the E SUV Bike

The gears also determine where your bike is fun. Terrain and mountains require some choice in gears and a wide range. For moderate tours and everyday use, everything can be a bit simpler (and thus cheaper). Most bikes have 1x chain gears; if it leans towards MTB, a wide range of gears is mandatory. However, an SUV can also be more equipped like a city bike and include uncomplicated parts like a stepless gear.

Weight

A robust frame, a lot of load capacity, thick tires, a large drive, and a versatile all-around setup—it's clear that no lightweight bike comes out of this. And so SUV E-bikes weigh impressive amounts. You should always expect more than 20 kg, and sometimes even the 30 kg mark is exceeded!

If you need to transport a lot, you should pay attention to the permissible total weight (SUV + luggage + rider) and the load limit of the luggage rack when purchasing.

SUV E-Bike Frame

The voluminous SUV frames offer plenty of material, usually this material is aluminum. Carbon is at home in lightweight construction, and lightweight construction and SUVs do not go well together. Moreover, the frames are primarily one thing: Comfortable. In MTB-SUVs, the riding position can be somewhat sportier, otherwise, the motto is "comfort first!"

⚡ The E-bike Drive on the SUV

Generally, SUVs prefer to be overpowered rather than annoying with too little oomph. Depending on the orientation, you get a motor with 70 Nm torque and more, and if your bike is close to an MTB or even a fully, you will surely appreciate the high performance. If your bike is more oriented towards a trekking bike or a city E-bike, a little less torque is quite okay. The high weight combined with a large motor makes the SUV E-bike hungry—therefore, large batteries are at work. Below 600 watts, the storage space will quickly run out, and sometimes dual batteries are installed here.

In lightweight construction, rear-wheel drives are currently celebrating a comeback, but for an SUV, these motors would be far too weak. Here, mid-motors are at work, which not only have plenty of power, they give the E-bike a low, central center of gravity and are also a factor that contributes to the excellent, stable road handling.

SUVs with mountain bike genes

If your bike should accompany you off-road, an SUV E-Bike that is closely built to a mountain bike is the right choice. It then has a frame damper and wide tires, making it off-road capable. You get a suspension fork with a lot of travel, and these bikes often have drives specifically developed for mountain bikes. They can push powerfully at specific points, helping you over obstacles or up inclines. Up to this point, the bike is an MTB, but it also has the comfort equipment (lights, luggage rack, fenders) on board. Thanks to its equipment, it works on trails and on the road.

The MTB-heavy SUV E-Bike at a glance:

  • Diamond frame
  • Suspension fork with a lot of travel
  • Fully or hardtail
  • Large drive, high torque, large battery

Trekking bikes for long distances

Do you enjoy taking tours and want to experience some comfort along the way? Then a touring SUV E-Bike is perfect for you! Here, the drive is optimized for linear support over a long period, you can load a lot of luggage, and the seating position is comfortable enough for long hours in the saddle.

The touring SUV at a glance:

  • Trapezoidal frames are common here, but there are also diamond frames and some low-entry models.
  • The drives have medium torque and large batteries with a lot of range.

A packhorse for the city: City SUV E-Bikes

E-SUVs derived from city bikes are comfortable all-rounders for the city. Imagine a wide, stately comfort bike, and you're pretty close. The city version of the SUV may have a slightly smaller motor, and the tires can be narrower. Overall, it is – typical city bike – built more for numerous short distances than for continuous use. However, it is still a robust, everyday family vehicle. Thanks to their safe driving characteristics, these e-bikes are particularly recommended for transporting small passengers; firstly, they handle well with a child seat on the luggage rack or a trailer, and secondly, they offer a lot of safety in varied city traffic. There are also models with typical uncomplicated city bike components like a belt drive or a continuously variable transmission. All in all, it is perfectly suited for your everyday city life.

The City SUV E-Bike at a glance:

  • Available with a particularly low and comfortable entry, with trapezoidal frame or in diamond shape.
  • medium torque, small battery
  • narrower tires, all-weather tires

Are there also SUV bicycles?

Today, practically every type of bicycle is available in versions with and without E. This does not apply to the SUV category! There are a lot of e-bikes that fall into the SUV category. However, there are hardly any non-motorized bicycles that could be called SUVs – and for good reason: They would be too heavy. Without a drive, such a heavy bicycle is simply no fun! Even on flat terrain, such a bike would be a real clunker, and climbs would be a torment for a normally trained cyclist. That's why such a bike only makes sense (and fun!) with an electric drive.

Is an E-SUV bike the right e-bike for you?

It's best to turn the question around. For whom is the SUV not suitable? There would actually only be speed junkies who want the lightest possible pedelec. An SUV e-bike is the wrong bike for only a few other cyclists. The enormous versatility ensures that almost everyone can benefit from a robust e-bike. Here are a few examples:

  • Commuters will appreciate the all-weather suitability and safe driving style. Those who set off for work sleepily in the morning will be pleased when the bike is a no-brainer, doing what it's supposed to do without much thought.
  • For families who want to transport children, safe driving and the robust luggage rack are the optimal prerequisites.
  • Tour riders appreciate the riding comfort.
  • All-weather cyclists are on the dry side with grippy tires, good brakes, and mudguards.
  • Today trail, tomorrow tour and the day after tomorrow with a child seat on the luggage rack for shopping. The MTB-SUV covers many uses.
  • Those who want no stress will appreciate the durable components.

❌ The disadvantages of the SUV E-Bike

Versatile, comfortable, and extremely robust. Where should disadvantages hide in such an E-Bike? To be honest – there are disadvantages and we don't want to withhold them from you. SUVs are not lightweight. Nor are they particularly delicate. One might even call them “sturdy”. Their efficiency is also not outstanding; other E-Bikes can better convert your pedaling efforts and the power of the drive into propulsion. And last but not least, there are certainly cheaper E-Bikes.

  • An SUV E-Bike is not a lightweight. Today you can buy some particularly light bicycles and E-Bikes, SUVs are not among them! If you want to carry your E-Bike into the bike cellar, you should steer clear of an SUV! Here you would usually have to carry well over 20 kg.
  • The most efficient bicycle is a racing bike. It is light, stiff, and has an extremely low seating position. The E-Bike SUV is the exact opposite of that. You understand what we mean. If you want to ride at top speed with minimal effort, an SUV is not your bike, because it is not efficient!
  • An SUV is a fine thing, but there are cheaper E-Bikes. And this brings us to the last point:

What does an SUV €-Bike cost?

A durable full equipment is unfortunately usually not a bargain. There are few SUV E-Bikes under 3500 euros, most models are significantly above that. Especially if you want to buy a fully suspended E-Bike, 4500 euros and more are quickly due. For particularly good and current SUV E-Bikes from top brands, equipped with large, high-quality drives, up to 8500 € can be called for.
