REFRESHING AN ICON.
Chester pedals have long been a staple in the Race Face product lineup, known for being an affordable yet high-quality composite pedal. Durable, comfortable, and available in a variety of colors, Chester was the first choice for bike shop employees when it came to outfitting a customer's new bike. This did not go unnoticed by our competitors, who have released new or updated composite pedals to dethrone Chester from the top position.
After years of serving riders of all skill levels, it was time for an update to Chester. We wanted a pedal with a better riding feel, more size options, and updated aesthetics. A pedal that would exceed the expectations of both beginners and die-hard fans of composite pedals.
(R)E-MEET CHESTER.
We used insights from the original (and cherished) Chester to address riders' pain points. Feedback from riders showed us that our pedals:
- Were too convex
- Could have more grip
- Would benefit more riders if we offered them in different sizes
We addressed these points - and made additional improvements - by considering the following factors: pedal shape, platform size, pins, and Q-factor.
The result? The best composite pedal Race Face has ever made.
WHAT'S NEW WITH CHESTER?
Pedal Shape:
In our previous version, the pedal platform had a bulge in the middle to house the pedal axle. Many composite pedals require more material in this area to achieve the desired strength (aluminum is stronger and requires less material to achieve the same strength). The downside of the bulge was an insecure, convex feel. In the new Chester, we slimmed down the pedal axle housing without compromising strength and almost completely eliminated the bulge. The result is a more concave and secure feel.
Platform Size:
We developed the new Chester pedal in two sizes: Small (105 x 100 mm) and Large (115 x 110 mm), to better meet the needs of all riders. The choice of platform size largely depends on the rider's preferences, but we found a rough correlation to shoe size, as seen in the table below. (The previous Chester pedals were available in one size with dimensions of 110 x 101 mm.)
Pin Placement, Type, and Number:
The new Chester pedal now features nine metal pins and two molded plastic pins, totaling 11 pins per pedal side (three more than the previous model). The pins were strategically placed to provide more even grip across the entire pedal circumference and a more concave feel. The metal pins also have smaller, threadless tips, which improve grip and allow riders to reposition their feet if needed. Threadless pin tips also make it easier to remove the pins when they need to be replaced and make the pins less harmful to the skin in the event of a "shinner" (injury from slipping off the pedal).
Q-Factor:
We have removed the key approaches at the pedal axle to reduce the Q-factor, which means the rider's feet sit closer to the cranks. With a simple pedal change, riders can now improve the ergonomics of their ride.
